A New Three-Phase Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
12. februar 2008, Maribor, TECES
The mutual cooperation between researchers from
TECES and UM FERI was again more than successful. A new
energy high-efficient three-phase line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor was developed. It unites advantages of the
squirrel-cage induction motor and the
permanent magnet synchronous motor (

The new
three-phase line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor:
- is capable of line-starting under load (i.e. the ability to start from zero rotor speed when fed from a constant amplitude and constant frequency voltage source);
- exhibits higher efficiency and power factor values (Figure) compared to an induction motor with equal dimensions and rated data (Y380V/50Hz 1100W 1400rpm). Moreover, the new three-phase line start permanent magnet synchronous motor generates less heat. The average stator winding temperature in thermal equilibrium is approximately 30°C lower than the one from the induction motor.
- the position sensor (from usual permanent magnet synchronous motor drives) is no longer needed.
Simulation results and their experimental verification on manufactured prototypes confirmed the suitability of the scientific starting-points, used analysis procedures and TECES’ own developed and commercial tools in the design of electric machines.
With
the acquired knowledge and particular solutions, TECES has supplemented the existing knowledge in the research and development field of new concepts of electric machines, which enables potential motor manufacturers and suppliers the marketing of products on markets, which demand energy high-efficient electro-motors.
The usage of line-start permanent magnet synchronous motors, which replace induction motors, can on a long-term contribute to the lowering of electrical energy consumption and with it the users’ electrical energy cost and also to the lowering of the negative influence of electrical energy production on the environment.
