On the 30th of June 2007 after several years, the research and development project »Research & Development support of innovations in the field of opto-mechatronic omnidirectional displays« of the company Kolektor Group d.o.o. with TECES and UM FERI as partners, was successfully finished.
The project is a part of the TECES' partners joint project  »TECES-ESRR, Development of innovative environment for computer-controlled electric drive systems, actuators and sensors«, which was carried out between 2004 and 2007.

The R&D project »Research & Development support of innovations in the field of opto-mechatronic omnidirectional displays« with Kolektor Group d.o.o. as the project holder, represents one of the key projects within the diversification activities supported by the iDRIUM division, the business unit of the concern Kolektor Group d.o.o.. The business programme of omnidirectional displays is considered as the field with the greatest innovatory potential; the display defines anew the presentation of visual information in space, as it is capable of showing the same picture to all observers with its reach in a room that is optimal due to the visual angle of 360°.

Contactless Energy Transfer into a Rotating Body
Previous solutions in energy transfer to a rotating body were mainly based on application of slip rings, because of which the majority of project activities of the partners in the TECES and UM FERI project were oriented primarily to research and development of new concepts on contactless magnetic energy transfer to the rotating part of the omnidirectional display.

Results of research activities have provided solutions for contactless energy transfer for two target applications:

  1. Contactless energy transfer into a rotating body up to the power of 1,000 W
Energy transfer is performed by using of a rotating high-frequency transformer with an air slit, and a resonant converter. The resonant converter principle enables low interferences and a high efficiency. The solution provides also a good ratio between the employed volume and the energy transferred.

  2. Contactless energy transfer into a rotating body up to the power of 4,000 W
Energy transfer is performed by an integrated solution including the motor-generator-rectifier, with a correction of the power factor at the omnidirectional display drive shaft.
The omnidirectional display drive shaft is a common element in both, the motor (synchronous motor with permanent magnets) and the generator (synchronous generator with permanent magnets), where the motor is also used for the shaft drive. In this case, the motor enables rotation of the display, providing necessary mechanical power to rotate the generator, at the same time. Selection of the actual motor type and the generator type depends on achievement of the highest efficiency in the whole area of loads.

In general, there exist two concepts of integrated solution of the motor-generator on the drive shaft:
      a) Variant of one above another: the motor and generator have a common axis, being installed one above another,
      b) Variant of nestled generator: the motor and generator have a common axis, where the generator is nestled inside the motor.

Results of research activities have contributed to better understanding of the issues of contactless energy transfer into a rotating body. Acquired knowledge and solutions enable both, TEES and UM FERI for development of new concepts on energy transfer for different applications, while the acquired solutions provided the Kolektor Group with new possibilities for expansion of its production programme of omnidirectional displays.
